Spring Cleaning Hacks

March 21, 2017

With the weather warming up it's time to head outdoors, right? Not yet! First you'll need to tackle those annual spring cleaning to-dos. Don't worry, we've compiled a list of spring cleaning tips to make your life a lot easier. The sooner you tidy up, the sooner you can get to having fun.

Start on the Right Foot

Before you begin cleaning, walk through each room and write down what needs to be done. Sometimes bigger projects need to be broken down into smaller tasks. Then, for proper motivation, make a great music playlist or download a book you've been wanting to hear. Do this the night or a few days before you actually clean, so you can begin cleaning first thing in the morning. The day of cleaning, have a few alarms set to remind yourself to take breaks, this helps power you through a long day.

In addition to spring cleaning tips, this list has you covered with some management tips. Who are you managing? Everyone that lives in your home! Task your roommates, significant other and even children to pitch in. Be sure to assign tasks that they can handle and you won't end up having to clean again yourself. Better yet, work on tasks together: one person vacuums while the other mops, one of you cleans the bathroom sinks, the other tackles the tubs.

Clean Windows on a Cloudy Day

When the sun is shining, it'll dry up sprayed cleaner faster, leaving behind streaks. Save the windows for a cloudy day for a streak-free shine. After cleaning your windows and any glass surfaces, for that matter, use 1 teaspoon of lemon oil or glass treatment spray (the same stuff you use on your car windows) to help water bead off quickly. This trick works especially great on glass shower doors and mirrors that tend to get dusty.

Go All-Natural

This is one of our favorite spring cleaning tips as it not only cleans effectively, but it's economical. Instead of shelling out money on expensive, chemical laden cleaners, use good old fashioned vinegar as a multi-purpose spray. It's comparable to bleach as a disinfectant and cleans mirrors without leaving streaks. For stubborn stains in sinks and tubs, rub with baking soda. On wood furniture, mix 1/2 teaspoon olive oil with 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar or lemon juice in a spray bottle. Shake well and use a microfiber cloth to apply.

Get Creative with Cleaning Tools

Think outside the box when it comes to getting every bit of grime. Coffee filters are gentle enough to rub smudges out of TV and computer screens. Cotton swabs get the crumbs out from the keys of a keyboard. A rag wrapped around a butter knife lets you dust in the crevices of an air vent. Use old socks as "dusting mittens."

Had enough of the spring cleaning tips and organizing? Don't overtask yourself, you might need a few days to tackle every cleaning project.
